Empirical research often encompasses national, regional and international comparative studies - a field that has grown rapidly in recent years. Through its extensive network, SADA can channel data and information stored in its databases to interested researchers worldwide. Through its computerised system, SADA can also obtain data from outside the country for interested researchers in South Africa.

SADA's access to the collections of other data archives is facilitated by its membership of organisations such as the International Federation of Data Organisations (IFDO), the Council of European Social Science Data Archives (CESSDA) (of which it is an associate member), the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) and the International Association for Social Science Information Service and Technology (IASSIST).

Inter-University Consortium for Social and Political Research (ICPSR)

SADA is a subscribing national member of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). Established in 1962, ICPSR provides access to the world's largest archive of computer-based research and instructional data (housing over 8000 studies), and training facilities in basic and advanced techniques of quantitative social analysis and other resources that facilitate secondary analysis.

The data holdings cover a broad range of disciplines, including political science, sociology, demography, economics, history, foreign policy and law. It has specific topical archives in the fields of health and medical care, gerontology, substance abuse and mental health, education and criminal justice.

International Federation of Data Organisations (IFDO)

IFDO was established in response to advanced research needs of the international social science community. The founders felt it would be advantageous to co-ordinate world-wide data services and thus enhance social science research. Through the foresight and planning of the late Stein Rokkan, IFDO became a reality, and since November 1977, IFDO maintains associate memberships in the International Social Science Council of UNESCO.

International Association for Social Science Information Service & Technology (IASSIST)

IASSIST is an organization dedicated to the issues and concerns of data librarians, data archivists, data producers, and data users. This unique professional association assists members in their support of social science research. IASSIST has a membership of individuals, many of whom are professionals in social data information centers.

Council of European Social Science Data Archives (CESSDA)

CESSDA is an informal alliance of European data archives which was set up in June 1976. CESSDA promotes the acquisition, archiving and distribution of electronic data for social science teaching and research in Europe. It encourages the exchange of data and technology and fosters the development of new organisations in sympathy with its aims. It associates and cooperates with other international organisations sharing similar objectives. SADA is an associate member of CESSDA.
